Signature of a partnership agreement between France and the Pacific Community

On 28 January, Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Mr Stuart Minchin, Director General of the Pacific Community (SPC) signed the multi-year cooperation partnership agreement between France and the Pacific Community (SPC).

This strengthens the 74-year relationship between France, a founding member of SPC, and the largest intergovernmental technical and scientific organisation in the Pacific, composed of 26 members.

This new framework will strengthen joint and multilateral action in four priority areas: public health, climate change, the oceans and sustainable management of natural resources, as well as promote common values, including gender equality.

The multi-donor “KIWA Initiative” for climate change adaptation and biodiversity protection in the Pacific led by the Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency -AFD), with a budget of some EUR 35M – including EUR 13M from France and EUR14M from the European Union, – is a recent example of the excellent relations that exist between SPC and France.
