Volunteering Projects
The reception of young volunteers, and more generally the reception of foreign partners, is one of the main project of the Opunohu Agricultural High School. The “Sharing Our Cultures” project is in line with this objective by contributing directly to develop European citizenship among young people and school staff.
Polynesian students are few in contact with people from Europe. Some of them have never even left their island until they come to a high school located in Tahiti or Moorea. They have little knowledge of Europe and the cultures of the different countries. They have for the most part financial difficulties, and very difficult access to mobility because of the enormous cost of transport. The shool would like to welcome volunteers and make them discover the cultures and traditions of various European countries but also show them that in their future work, there may be lessons to be learned from the practices used in these countries.
Young volunteers will have an important role in academic and language support, support for young people’s personal projects abroad (professional internships), the creation of an area educational marine and the organization of non-formal cultural and sports activities with students outside normal school classes.
Academic success, social and professional integration, initiative and the involvement of students (often day-pupils and from very modest backgrounds) in the life of the school also represents a strong focus of the establishment project.
The volunteers will contribute, through their actions, their presence and their particular status within the school and our teams, help student to succeed and be play an important part to the reduction of school drop-out rates and to give a European, concrete and positive dimension.
